Carla Bailey has cooked at East Oxford Farmer’s Market since its conception at Manzil Way with Brian and Josie. Carla's latest venture at East Oxford Market is, ‘Salad Daze’ - healthy salads to take away, which her daughter contrived whilst studying for her MA exams. She is also at Hogacre Cafe every other Sunday cooking Vegetarian/ Vegan food.
Her Nana cooked all the time when she was growing up, nothing was brought frozen. Her sister also cooked professionally, so Carla never had to cook; not interesting her until she started yacht chartering on Barefoot. Stopping off at ports around the West Indies and the Americas, buying local produce from the markets - the fish, was always caught at sea. My Godmother, Jenny, the cook, inspired her.
She met her future partner whilst sourcing produce for her little back yard cafe in English Harbour, Antigua. He lived and worked acres of fruit trees - you name it, he grew it - along with vegetables for himself and to sell. So began her life and love of growing and cooking organically. Cutting out the middleman wherever possible, and she’s always tried to follow that practice with each venture she takes on.
