The weekly market is fully staffed by volunteers, including the Market Manager (who gets paid a small fee).
The 'standard' volunteer role is to assist the Market Manager. This involves a variety of jobs, including putting up and taking down the market's street signs, collecting stall rental and other small tasks. There are two shifts, 9:30am-11:00am and 12:00am-1:30pm.
The Market Managers' role is to oversee the market - they need to be there early to ensure everyone is in the right place, and later oversee take down and clean up. During the market they need to be available for questions or to deal with any problems arising. There are two shifts: 8:30am - 11:30am and 11:30am - 2:30pm; the manager gets paid a small fee.
What volunteers say
And here are some comments from our volunteers about their experience of helping out at the market:
“I love volunteering at the market! I get to be part of a great community project and enjoy delicious home-made cake as a reward. It's also a good way to make sure I go over regularly to buy fresh veg and other lovely and locally produced products and to hang out with a bunch of really nice people.” (local resident)
“It's really nice to feel part of the Market gang these days! Happy to be part of something that has had such good thinking put into it.” (local resident)
“This is going to be my last month to help, as I leave Oxford in beginning of June. I hope I can support this my favourite place more as a volunteer in May.” (Brookes student from Japan)
